VOCAL MUSIC

Concert Choir (Grades 9-12)

This non-auditioned ensemble is designed for the beginning-intermediate choral music student. Emphasis is placed upon basic music fundamentals including healthy vocal production/technique, music reading and notation, rhythmic practice, ear training, sight-reading and basic music theory. Additionally, students are challenged to consistently demonstrate a high level of commitment to their success individually and as a group through individual progress, teamwork, and leadership.

Performance Requirements: Students are expected to develop their skills as choristers and participate in after-school rehearsals and all vocal music concerts . Additionally, students will need to purchase designated concert attire for their personal use and are encouraged to participate in OMEA solo and ensemble contest.

Concert Choir Stride Section (Grades 9-12): This choral opportunity is offered to those students that desire to be in the Concert Choir but are not able to schedule the course within their regular class schedule. Students may voluntarily select to be in the Concert Choir Stride Section and are eligible to participate in all vocal concerts and activities.
Students must obtain director’s permission in order to register.


Varsity Voices

This select group is for students that demonstrate an advanced level of vocal technique, musicianship, and showmanship.  The literature performed by this ensemble is difficult and challenging – thus requiring extra rehearsal time individually, and as a group.   Varsity Voices is a select group, comprised primarily juniors and seniors with at least one year of choral experience.  Underclassmen may be selected provided they have a strong desire to be in the group, a willingness to commit to the rigorous rehearsal and performance schedule, and the strength of their audition.   Placement into this advanced ensemble is open to students enrolled in choir and by audition only

 Varsity Voices rehearses after school once a week.  Members of this group are required to attend additional rehearsals as needed and committed to singing and performing at a very high level.  Varsity Voices participates in concerts held at CHS as well as other performance and service opportunities, including Christmas and community events, elementary school tours, festivals, and competitions.

Bel Canto Women’s Ensemble

This select women’s ensemble (SSAA) will prepare and perform a variety of musical styles that require advanced ability in reading music, sight-singing, and choral technique. Students selected for this ensemble must exhibit a strong commitment to personal musical growth and excellence. Placement into this advanced chorus is open to students enrolled in choir (including Stride) and by audition only.

Bel Canto rehearses after school once a week.  Members of this group are required to attend additional rehearsals as needed and committed to singing and performing at a very high level.  Bel Canto participates in concerts held at CHS as well as other performance and service opportunities, including Christmas and community events, elementary school tours, festivals, and competitions.


Men’s Chorus Barbershop Ensemble

This select men’s ensemble (TTBB) will prepare and perform both Barbershop and A Cappella jazz selections that require advanced ability in reading music, sight-singing, and choral technique. Students selected for this ensemble must exhibit a strong commitment to personal musical growth and excellence. .Placement into this advanced chorus is open to students enrolled in choir (including Stride) and by audition only.

Men’s Chorus rehearses before school twice a week.  Members of this group are required to attend additional rehearsals as needed and committed to singing and performing at a very high level.  Men’s Chorus participates in concerts held at CHS as well as other performance and service opportunities, including Christmas and community events, elementary school tours, festivals, and competitions.

OMEA Solo and Ensemble Contest

Interested choral students are eligible to participate in the Ohio Music Education Association Solo and Ensemble Contest. This adjudicated event provides an opportunity for young vocalists to develop and demonstrate their musicianship, artistry and skill. Each participant will perform a selected work for an adjudicator to receive an evaluation, comments and score.
